PostDoc Position Genetic and functional analysis of novel antigens from Gram-positive bacterial pathogens

The position is for 2 years.Gram-positive bacterial pathogens are a major global health problem today, especially due to their ability to attain multiple drug resistance. These pathogens elaborate an array of virulence factors, ranging from capsules to secreted enzymes, which ensure their success as human pathogens. Most of these factors are surface-associated or secreted proteins that are indeed excellent antigens. Inspite of the advances in available genetic tools to study Gram-positive bacteria, the biological functions of several surface and secreted proteins remain undefined. Additionally, these bacteria posses various secretory systems that mediate protein export to the cell surface and to the external environment. While some of these pathways such as the Sec are well understood, the precise mechanisms underlying alternate systems are unclear. The goals of this project will be to examine the role of selected surface and secreted proteins in bacterial physiology and during infection, applying advanced genetic tools.
